Who hasn´t seen those red removable braces?

They used to be practically the only type of removable braces available to us orthodontists.

Today we differentiate between active plates, which include removable braces, and functional orthodontic appliances.
On this page you will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of active plates.
The Active Plate...
The active plate is a removable appliance for orthodontic treatment.
It consists of a plastic plate, wire elements and screws. Wire clips ensure that the braces are held firmly in the mouth.

The wire elements or screws exert a constant pressure to move the teeth in a predetermined direction, to expand the jaw and to widen the dental arch.
This enables us, for example, to create space for crowded teeth and then straighten the tilted teeth.

Since we can control exactly where and how much pressure is exerted, active plates work very quickly and "actively", which is why these plate appliances are called active plates.
Where indicated, we can also build in extra wires to keep the tongue, lips and cheeks away from the teeth.
The pressure is continually reactivated!
Active plates work due to the constant pressure exerted by adjustable screws, wire springs or archwires.

To enable the pressure to be reactivated once the teeth have moved, the orthodontist, or in some cases the patients themselves after receiving instructions, readjust the built-in compression or tensioning screws at regular intervals.
Life´s early lessons...

Unlike non-compliance treatment, where a fixed appliance is attached to the teeth and remains in the mouth, the removable braces must be worn regularly, at least 15 hours per day, in order for treatment to achieve positive results.

And that´s not always easy, particularly for our young patients.
Treatment with removable braces always requires a lot of discipline, patience and perseverance on the part of the patient - which on the other hand, can be a good lesson for young people to learn for the rest of their lives.
"Really cool", today´s braces...

Whether Diddl mouse or the Hertha Berlin soccer club flag, we have the right braces for every kid´s favorite!

Advantages of the removables...

Removable braces have the advantage that they can be taken out at any time. This makes it easier to brush the teeth after meals without having to change the way you brush. And it means our patients can continue to maintain easy, thorough dental hygiene.

And here´s a further bonus:
The braces don´t have to be worn on those special occasions where you want to look your best, which, of course, is impossible with fixed braces.

As you can see in our photos, the kids like colorful outfits which they can always choose on their own at our practice.
