How are teeth actually moved?
|
|
|
|
There is movement everywhere in our bodies. Our teeth are also constantly in motion.
Our teeth are not permanently fused with the jaw bone; they are elastically suspended in the jaw bone with so-called
Sharpey fibers. This allows our teeth to absorb the forces acting on them without damaging the teeth or jaw bone.
Braces exert a constant pressure on the teeth over longer periods of time.
This constant pressure slowly moves the teeth in the desired direction.
Normally, the fibers holding the teeth are only slightly tensioned.
But when braces exert constant pressure on a tooth, this situation changes:
The fibers on one side of the tooth are pressed together creating a compression zone.
On the other side, a tension zone develops because the fibers on this side are being stretched.

The bones of the jaw react very sensitively to this pressure.
At the points where pressure is being exerted, the bone of the jaw begins to recede.
At these points, the tooth is constricting the gap between itself and the bone, and the bone
slowly begins to break down in order to restore the gap to its normal size.
Just the opposite happens on the other side of the tooth where the fibers are exerting a constant tension.
This triggers the growth of new bone material in order to also restore the gap to its original size.

Nature takes care of the rest!
This behavior allows the teeth to be moved in practically any desired direction. The secret is not
the exertion of especially strong forces, but just the constant pressure of lighter forces. Nature takes care of the rest.
